With a humble beginning in 1984, SASTRA’s progress in the last 40 years is a testimony to its commitment to building a university as envisaged in its guiding model. Today, SASTRA is one of the top universities offering undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes in Engineering, Management, Law, Sciences, Humanities, and Education. It was conferred Deemed-to-be-University status in 2001 by the University Grants Commission under Section 3 of the UGC Act 1956. SASTRA also has an MHRD-notified off-campus named Srinivasa Ramanujan Centre (SRC) at Kumbakonam.
SASTRA has been re-accredited in the IV cycle with a maximum GRADE 'A++' by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).
The Score of 3.76 puts SASTRA as the number one university of its type in Tamilnadu and among the top in the country.
The Institution of Engineers (India) has accredited all eligible B. Tech. Programmes offered by SASTRA.
M/s Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. has accredited SASTRA with an ‘A’ grade (Highest), putting it in the elite company of premier institutes. TCS also separately accredited the MBA programme.
The Washington Accord team visited India in the month of January 2005 and visited three government institutions and SASTRA to assess the quality of engineering education in India. Dr. Douglas Ruth, Chairman of the visiting team, was impressed with the facilities at SASTRA and recorded thus:
